Brazil: Salvador da Bahia

Brazil: Salvador da Bahia

Brazil is the largest country in South America, bordering every other country on the continent except Ecuador and Chile, and the fifth-largest in the world. Its population is estimated to be nearing 200 million. Students of Portuguese, as well as those interested in economic, environmental, cultural, and social issues of the developing world, will benefit from time spent in Brazil. While the country still faces considerable challenges, it has enjoyed a period of growth in the last decade and has been grouped with Russia, China, and India as one of the world’s emerging powerhouses. As if to confirm that prognosis, Brazil was chosen to host both the next soccer World Cup and the 2016 Olympic Games. As you might expect from its size, Brazil brings together a variety of landscapes, from the imperiled tropical rainforests of the Amazon to the savannas of central Brazil and the Atlantic beaches of Rio. And the people of Brazil are an equally fascinating ethnic and cultural mix.

Salvador da Bahia was the first capital of colonial Brazil, and a major port for the sugar and slave trade in the sixteenth century.Today, it is the bustling capital of the north-eastern state of Bahia. Eighty percent of its 20 million population is of African descent, which gives the city a unique culture and style. In the historic center, the Pelourinho, you’ll find cobblestone streets and fine colonial-era buildings.  Also renowned for its spicy, seafood-based cuisine and its music, the city is home to annual seven-day Carnival that The Guinness Book of Records reckons to be the largest street party on the planet! Another benefit of spending time in Bahia is the opportunity to learn Capoeira, the Afro-Brazilian blend of dance and martial art. There again, the city has 30 miles of some of the best beaches in the world.
